Text by Bertolt Brecht
Mir damals ins Gesicht:
Gentlemen, my mother said to me some very terrible words:
I would end up in the theater
Or in an even worse place.
Yes, something like that is easily said,
But I tell you: it won’t come true!
You can’t do that to me!
What will become of me, you’ll see!
A person is not an animal!
Because as you make your bed, so must you lie in it
Nobody tucks you in
And if somebody’s kicking, it’s me
And if someone’s being kicked, it’s you.
Gentlemen, my boyfriend, he said
To me once to my face:
“The greatest thing on earth is love”
And “one doesn't think in the morning”
Yes, “Love” is a word easily said:
But as one gets older every day
Love isn't asked for
You have to use the short time you’re given
A person is not an animal!
Because as you make your bed, so must you lie in it…

Text by Georg Kaiser
Und nirgends will man mich behalten,
I am a poor relative
and just belong to others
Oh, if only nobody would look after me
But that's what Uncle and Auntie do
and nothing pleases them whatever I do
This ain't no life, just quite annoying, but you have to endure
(for you don't know) what will be.
I have a suitcase full of belongings
that I carry 'round with me everywhere
Oh, if I could only get rid of it!
For it scrapes my fingers sore
and I'm not the strongest either.
And there's nowhere where they want to keep me
because I am not to be seen around.
I wish I could run away
and manage my own existence
after my own fashion !
This ain't no life, just quite annoying, but you have to endure
(for you don't know) what will be
Sometimes I could dream
of not being related at all.
Nobody could send me to get and fetch
I wouldn't have to duck and bow
I'd gladly shake the next man's hand
(because) I am not related to him!
Oh, that would be the life, that would be a joy
if one could forget that you have be related.
